Gameumentary Update – New Look and a News Update

If you know me, I’m notorious for updating the look of my sites pretty often. My writers hate it, but I love setting these things up and learning all the intricacies of the theme.

When we first launched the site, we wanted to make it feel like each piece on the site was its own “feature.” That was the reason we went with the more blocky look and for each post to have its own “cover.” However, as we continued posting new content, I quickly came to realize the theme we were using lacked a lot of features that should be included with all WordPress themes, most notably being able to make sure duplicate posts aren’t in the slider and main area, comment counts on the homepage, etc.

I’m not going to talk your ear off regarding some of the things I had to manually set to make the site look nice — just know that it was a time sink. This new theme includes all the features we will need for the foreseeable future, and is much more in-line with my style of design: clean, easy to navigate, and uncluttered. Also, with our focus on features and short docs, this theme does a great job of highlighting that. If you haven’t yet, check out the homepage slider.

I’m still working on getting some pages set up for some different features and getting some of the little details in check, but the theme is pretty much ready to go.

The team and I are still having discussions about potentially including news on the site. Both polls that I have put up on Twitter regarding the possible inclusion of limited news on the site were voted for in favor of sharing news on here. This decision is not something that we are taking lightly, since it was part of our original goal to not do news at all.

What we’ve come to realize as a small team of volunteers on a new outlet (again) is that it’s very hard to keep a steady traffic flow and get our content shared across platforms without posting more often. The current plan that I have is to include news on the site, but relegate it from the front page so that it’s available for those that want it, but not the focus.

The team and I’s focus remains completely on major features, reviews & analysis, and short docs. That’s what we founded this site on and it will remain that way. But, I think until we find our audience, it may be necessary to share some news on the site for the sake of increasing our traffic draw and content output.

We will decide for sure what we are doing on Sunday evening. Luckily for you, we just got a bunch of new features locked-in as well. May is going to be a big month for the site, I can tell you that. Also, if you’re hoping for more tech and design focused articles, we’ve got a few of those lined up for you as well.

Stay tuned!
